FESTIVAL DAY 1
Activism through Theatre w/ CIRCA-Pintig
In this interactive workshop, the members of CIRCA Pintig will discuss what goes into running a successful non-profit organization, as well as share some of their trials, tribulations and triumphs they have encountered over the past 21 years. They will also discuss what it is like to share Filipino culture through theater.
Mabuhay: Welcome to the Food Business
Cuisine and food is a large part of Filipino culture. Kevin Johnson will be explaining about the establishment of his grocery store and the struggles of establishing a small business in a large city with a low Filipino-American population. We will also be discussing the importance of food within the Filipino culture. Come for a great discussion and maybe a surprise!
To the Center Stage: Multicultural and Immigrant Identity CIRCA-Pintig Theatre Performance feat. First Wave Scholars
CIRCA-Pintig, the Center for Immigrant Resources & Community Arts, is a Chicago-based community theatre group that speak of the immigrant experience within the changing multicultural landscape of America. They will be performing a short scene called "This Is Why I Don't Drink" from the May production of My Asian Mom and a one-act play called Mr. and Mrs. LaQuesta Go Dancing.
Mr. and Mrs. LaQuesta Go Dancing written by Noel Alumit Synopsis: Jay and Lori La Questa, a middle-aged Filipino couple, are having their annual dance party. Mixed with food and their usual rhythmic gait through tango and cha cha, they gather friends as they always have to celebrate life and honor their only son, Boyett. To the outside world, the dance party may seem celebratory and candid but to their inner selves, it is a night of healing, reconciliation and catharsis from an experience that altered their lives forever. And this they would do in a way they know best – through dancing. As they dance the night away, they find themselves retelling stories about their son, both bitter and sweet, finding new meaning from a past that continues to haunt them in their search for peace and acceptance.
Opening acts include First Wave Scholars Jill Fukumoto, Dominic Nicholas, Ittai Wong, and Ashlyn Akins.
FESTIVAL DAY 2
Do-it-yourself Screen Printing
Jordan Bautista is a Textile and Apparel Design Major and also the President of the Textile & Apparel Student Association (TASA) on campus. Jordan shows a strong passion for creating and designing clothes, some of which were modeled and displayed in La Moda Processa in May 2011. She will be displaying her garments in this year's fashion show Escape, May 4, 2012. For this workshop, she will be presenting a do-it-yourself workshop about screen printing. Using easy-access and household items, learn how to create your own screen printed pieces. With your own t-shirt or pillowcase, share Jordan's passion in creating your own clothing and designs.
DJing with DJ *Hitmayng
The art of DJ-ing is one that transcends multiple cultures. Many Filipinos have taken this art form to entirely new realms. This workshop aims to teach people DJ-ing skills as well as inform them about how Filipino culture has shaped it. The workshop will be lead by FASO member, Ian Carroll aka DJ *hitmayng.
Breaking Barriers: The Fashion Show
Breaking Barriers: The Fashion Show is the finale for the Rated P 2012 festival. Fashion, especially the underground shirt printing culture, is commonplace for young Filipino-American entrepreneurs. Breaking Barriers will feature apparels from Inkred University, The Circus Clothing, and TASA, The Textile and Apparel Student Association.
